In my last blog, I talked about how hard putting yourself out there can be for some people. One suggestion I would make is to find small groups where you can give a talk about your book. After you have presented to a few small groups, you will probably be much more comfortable with public speaking. Keep in mind that when you agree to do a book talk in a library or book store, unless you are well known, you will probably just get a few people. You must not take that as a negative against yourself or your book. It is part of the condition of our too-busy society. There are some authors who won't bother with a venue unless there is the potential for a lot of people attending. My feeling is that I love | talking about my book and women's history so I don't care if it is only one-on-one. I'm sure a time study expert would tell me this is probably not the best use of my time, but you never know who you are going to meet and that person just might be someone who can further the attention to your book. In February, I will be speaking at the A Book in Hand grou (details in "Appearances") here on the Cape. About a dozen individuals show up once a month to hear about new release of other authors. By being part of this group, I feel I do two things. I, of course, promote my book but I also support others authors. I believe that's a good use of an evening. If you would like to know more about this group, please reply by way of a comment. |
